Watch and Pray: The Priority of Prayer

The average believer does not know what it means to give prayer the utmost importance in their lives. If you ask most of them about their prayer lives, they will say, “I pray before I eat. I pray before I go to sleep. I pray when I want to go on a journey. I pray when I want to dedicate my house or car. I pray when someone is sick. I pray when I have problems that need answers. I pray with my family before the day starts.” These are reactive prayers based on religious habits. This is why most believers are not rising above the storms of life.

Moving from Reaction to Purpose

If you want an active prayer life, it must be infused with purpose, just like when Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. Look at the beginning part of the prayer:

“…Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”(Luke 11:2).

Prayer is primarily to make things happen, not just to request things. You are not praying because you do not know your purpose; perhaps you are not sure of it, or if you are, you are ignorantly thinking prayer is just asking for things from God.

Dominating Circumstances through Private Prayer

If you want the events of your life to change—if you want a life where people see God’s glory—then your private prayer life must move from reacting to dominating circumstances by spending hours in prayer. When Jesus was praying at Gethsemane, He told His disciples who were asleep: “…What! Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40 NKJV). We need to move from the deceptive realm of “I have prayed today” to the realm of “I am prayer.”

In the world, people are compromising—sleeping with others or using immoral and illegal means to rise to success. Your good character alone will not place you above them. Your legal means of taking charge wherever you are is through an active personal prayer life, which makes tremendous power available for victory.

The Power of Praying in Tongues

The number one way every believer must pray is in tongues. It is a divine language given to us by God to speak to Him directly (1 Corinthians 14:2). It is a spirit-to-spirit communication. It is so powerful because our emotions cannot affect it.

There are times when you don’t “feel” like praying, even though you know you need to. Your emotions get in the way of praying right. The Holy Spirit is there to help us bypass the flesh and the mind, going straight to God (Romans 8:26). Praying in tongues helps us to pray out the perfect will of God.

Following the Apostolic Pattern

To show you the importance of praying in tongues, Paul said: “I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all” (1 Corinthians 14:18 NKJV). Paul prayed more in tongues than the entire Corinthian church combined. This is one powerful way to pray for hours. Paul, one of the greatest Apostles, summarized his prayer life for you, and the Holy Spirit agrees with it.

If your life seems out of control, you need to take charge by praying consistently in tongues. Praying in tongues edifies you. It brings out what God has put inside of you. The more you pray in tongues, the more you become conscious of the fact that you are bigger than the problems you face. You begin to see how small they are because you are stirring up the power of God resident in you. Power is the ability to do work. Now, you have power available to cause changes in your life.

Receive the Holy Spirit Today

If you are reading this and are not yet filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, we can settle it now. Our Father in heaven wants to give you the supernatural power you need to live a successful life. Scripture says:

“For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened… If ye… know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”(Luke 11:10, 13).

Based on this Scripture, if you ask, you will receive. Say this: “Father, I recognize that I need power. Please fill me with your Spirit. I receive it right now in the name of Jesus.”

Walking by Faith

As you have asked, you have received. Congratulations! You may not have “felt” anything immediately as you prayed, but that is how it was for me when I first prayed. I simply acted, knowing I had it. I acted knowing that the Holy Spirit is upon me, and it happened. You have seen how people who pray in tongues do it? By faith, act in the same way, knowing you have received. By faith, move your lips. Once again, congratulations on entering the realm of power.
